How does IT meet aggressive organizational goals on a shrinking budget? At Clemson University, cloud computing is part of the answer. Clemson’s IT leaders are evolving the university’s enterprise and high-performance computing (HPC) clusters to full-fledged clouds and offering cloud services to students, researchers, and organizations across South Carolina and the United States.

Clemson CIO and Vice Provost Jim Bottum and his team share the technology strategies and best practices they’re following as they design for an era of big-data workloads, advanced analytics, and increased collaboration. Foundational technologies for Clemson include the Intel® Xeon® processor E5 product family, VMware vSphere*, Dell Advanced Infrastructure Manager* (AIM*) for provisioning and management, Intel® Ethernet 10 Gigabit Converged Network Adapters, Intel® Solid State Drives, and a wide range of open source software. As a research university, Clemson IT is also active in developing new tools and technologies for cloud-based computing, including the Orange File System project (OrangeFS*). Clemson’s cloud strategy supports the university’s mission to provide an exceptional education for students, drive innovation through research, and stimulate economic development for the state.
