Since 1994, enterprises looking to protect the security and integrity of web transactions have relied on HTTPS*. HTTPS uses the standards-based IETF SSL/TLS* protocols to authenticate web servers and to encrypt traffic sent between the user and the web server. In recent years, there has been a notable movement towards extending encryption beyond just web commerce transactions to protecting all web traffic.

In 2010, Google switched to using HTTPS to secure use of their email service and browser searches. This helped prevent the theft of identity cookies, eavesdropping, as well as unwanted changes to transmitted content. Many other Internet service providers have also switched to HTTPS to secure their customers’ traffic, including Twitter* and Facebook*. More recently, Microsoft issued a patch to all their client and server operating systems that blocked the usage of cryptographic keys less than 2048 bits RSA.
